5 DIY Father’s Day Gift Ideas

February 13, 2023 in Crafts - Micaela

With lockdown having made shopping tricky, I have turned to making my own gifts and with Father’s Day coming up soon it’s a great opportunity to get my craft on and made something great for my dad to celebrate.

It can be hard to find store-bought gifts that have the right balance of practicality and love, so getting out the craft supplies and putting in the effort of making something will show the father figure in your life that you really care.

Here are 5 great crafty ideas to inspire you to make your own gifts this Father’s Day – and these make great family-friendly projects, so get the kids involved!

Father’s Day Card

The foundation for any good Father’s Day gift is the card and with lots of online resources, it’s easy to design and print your card at home. Check out sites offering font freebies to make your card stand out like this amazing graffiti font.

Why not use a beautiful photograph of you with your Dad as the main card and add a personalised greeting on the inside? I love the designs in this article from Good Housekeeping – my favourite is the Footprint Rocket Card!

Movie Night

One of my family’s traditions is to watch a movie together for special occasions. Usually, this involves heading out to the reclining seats at Showcase Cinema at Bluewater but right now that’s not possible – so why not set up your own movie night at home as a surprise for Dad?

Choose a movie you know your Dad will love, set the scene with comfortable seating and lighting. Why not throw in some homemade snacks? Make his movie snack fit for the holiday by affixing a custom label from dad’s own “little monsters” make your own mix with an assortment of nuts, dried fruit, and chocolate. Check out this guide to making a father’s day trail mix here.

Personalised BBQ Apron

It’s easier than you think to make personalised gifts at home with the help of a cutting machine and some vinyl. I love iron-on vinyl for making personalised garments such as t-shirts, or home decor like pillowcases. If your Dad is the BBQ King why not zhuzh up a basic Apron and make something personalised?

You can pick up basic Aprons online and iron-on vinyl fairly cheaply. You can cut the vinyl by hand by drawing out a simple design and using scissors but a cutting machine really makes all the difference. I am lucky enough to have a Cricut Maker, which quickly and precisely cuts materials into desired designs which can then be ironed onto the fabric to create a personalised gift that any BBQ pro would love

DIY Pre-Shave Oil

More men should have a skincare regime, especially those who shave regularly. Pre-shave oil is a great homemade alternative to shaving gel and helps leave skin silky smooth. A pre or post-shave oil can make all the difference for healthy skin and making a personalised blend of oils for a Father’s Day gift can be a lovely treat.

It’s super easy to make a DIY pre-shave oil, all you need is a nourishing blend of oils such as 1 part grapeseed oil and 1 part olive oil combined with a few drops of an essential oil of your choice for a delicious fragrance – my favourite is sandalwood.

Tie Rack

If your Dad is anything like mine he has a large collection of ties that he wears to work and I have to admit that for many years a tie was a regular gift in my house. I particularly enjoyed buying hilarious festive ties – he still wears one I bought at Christmas!

After years of giving ties for Father’s Day it seems only fair to offer a homemade way to keep them organised. Don’t panic, this project is really easy to make! It only requires a couple of basic tools and supplies like wood board, wood stain, glue, nails and a hammer. For the full tutorial check out this step by step from Craftaholicsanonymous.
