My mum is a huge fan of The Carpenters, so when we were offered the chance to attend a performance of The Carpenters Story at The Orchard Theatre in Dartford we didn’t hesitate before saying yes!
The award-winning Carpenters Story show celebrates the music of one of the most successful pop duos in music history, Richard & Karen Carpenter: The Carpenters.
They were an American vocal and instrumental duo that produced a distinct soft musical style, combining Karen’s contralto vocals with Richard’s arranging and composition skills. Sadly, The Carpenters ended in 1983 following Karen’s death from heart failure brought on by complications of anorexia.
The Carpenters Story is a highly acclaimed concert-style production which is touring the UK with fantastic recreations of the classic Carpenters songs which made the group a legend in the world of popular music.
Staring the vocal talents of Claire Furley and pianist / artistic director Phil Aldridge alongside lead guitar, bass, drums and orchestral instruments including the oboe and violin the audience is treated to live musicians and a stage-wide backdrop of state-of-the-art video projection.
The show features all of the Carpenters hit songs including (They Long To Be) Close To You, Yesterday Once More, We’ve Only Just Begun, Superstar, A Song For You, Rainy Days & Mondays, and many more!
We had a blast at the show, revelling in the music and the great atmosphere. We were amazed at just how similar Claire Furley’s sultry voice was to Karen Carpenters’ original vocals and we loved seeing the music performed live by clearly very talented musicians. We particularly enjoyed hearing the oboe and cor anglais.
