Medieval Weekend at Lullingstone Castle

When you live in the countryside surrounded by history it’s relatively easy to come across events which focus on educating people on different time periods through fun activities and immersive experiences, one of which I recently attended!

The Medieval Weekend at Lullingstone Castle runs every year at the end of May (this year it was 27th & 28th May. 11am – 5pm). The weekend sees the grounds of the Castle transformed into a medieval village thanks to the Woodvilles medieval re-enactment group whom actually bravely live on site over the weekend in their medieval tents complete with character dress, campfires and medieval weapons.

Visitors can explore the medieval village tents which show off a range of replica medieval bits and pieces from crafts to weapons, gruesome looking medical instruments to musical instruments and everything in between! The members of the re-enactment group are always on hand to answer any questions or give you a better look at any of the displays. My husband was particularly interested in the weapons and had to pick up almost every single sword to ‘test them’.

As if the medieval village isn’t enough then prepare to be blown away (haha) by the life action mock battles including the firing of live cannons at 1pm and an archery display at 3pm. You can always get some practice in yourself with everyone being offered the chance to get involved and try some sessions of archery.

My parents who are part of a metal detecting club were in attendance along with other club members who were showcasing artefacts discovered in the local area, educating the public about the hobby of metal detecting and fielding any questions in regards to the displays. I was rather taken with the toys!

Of course, the Castle Marquee tearoom is open during the event offering classic cakes, handmade shortbread, toasted teacakes, filter coffee and a range of teas and cold drinks plus some gluten-free options. There were also hot dogs and burgers being served during the day.

Events admission: £10 per adult, children under 15 free.

For more information about the events at Lullingstone Castle see their website.
