Making Your Small Bathroom Better

If you have a tiny bathroom, it can be a challenge to fit everything in the space that you have. Simple things, like where do you keep spare towels can be a problem, but there are ways of dealing with these issues.

Plan It First

Measure the space you have to work with and then look at the sizes of bath, showers, sinks and everything else you want. Having a plan on paper can save a disaster later when something proves to be too large.

Shower And Bath

If you want a shower and a bath in your tiny space, the answer has to be to have the shower over your bath rather than in a separate cubicle. You can save more space by using a shower curtain that will move backwards and forwards along the bath, rather than a glass door that needs room to move outwards.

Shower and bathtub combinations are great, as they do not take up too much space, some bathtubs being as short a 60 inches.

Corner Sinks

Corner sinks are a great way to save some space, as they will fit into a corner that might otherwise be wasted. A pedestal underneath a corner sink will not use as much room as a square one in the middle of a wall, and will still provide you with some storage area.

If your sink is next to the toilet you could extend a shelf from it over the top of the back of the toilet. It might not be very big, but when you are struggling for space, every little helps.

Floating Vanity

If your vanity floats above the floor it will give the impression of a bigger room. It can also be a useful area for sliding some things underneath. If t is kept clear below, it makes the floor easier to clean.

It is also a good idea to have a rounded vanity, as sharp corners in small places can be quite painful if you walk into them. A rounded vanity will prevent you from having bruised hips.

Mirrors

Have large, plain mirrors on the walls. This will give the illusion of a bigger room and will let you see more whatever part of the space you are standing in. Some people have all the walls totally mirrored, and the effect from this can be quite amazing.

For some people, it is the only way they ever see the back of themselves completely, and people who have done this seem to think it is the best thing they did in their tiny bathroom.

Heating

Heating is important in a bathroom but how do you provide that when your space is so tiny? There are several ways but the two most common is to have a vertical radiator, as the wall space they use is very little width wise, or have a heated towel rail, which will do the job as well.

OnlyRadiators.co.uk has a wide range of these radiators so you can see what they look like. They’re just as good a horizontal radiators, with the added bonus that they’re great for hanging towels on too.

Colours

Dark colours shrink the size of any room so in your small bathroom opt for neutral ones such as beiges or light greys. If you paint the ceiling in the same colour you will unify the space, and this has the effect of enlarging it to the eye rather than making it look smaller, as colour separation can do.

You could paint the ceiling just one shade lighter, but do not have the walls a totally contrasting colour.

The same can be said of the tiles. If they blend in with the paint on the walls and ceiling, the overall effect will be much better. You can add some extra colour with accessories such as towels, without having the walls and ceiling like a rainbow.

Lighting

Have as much natural light as possible, but of course, for privacy reasons that is not always the thing to do. Have some LED lights installed instead. They are a very cost effective way of lighting any room, are flexible in the levels you can have them at and will last for years.

You can have a remote control with them that lets you change the colour as well as the level of illumination, which means you can set them to suit your mood.

Recess Shelves And Cabinets

If you recess shelves and cabinets into the walls they will take up no space at all but will provide you with valuable storage. They do not need to go very far back into the walls to be very useful.

Making the most of a small bathroom need not be too difficult. It should be somewhere for you to have some peace and quiet, a sanctuary away from the hustle and bustle of daily life.
