Whether your home office is something that will be used most days or every so often, getting the design right can have a big effect on the levels of productivity that happen in there. These are our tips for creating the perfect home office.

Finding the right desk

Seen as the desk is the place you’ll be spending most of your time you want to ensure that it’s big enough for you to work at all day if you need it to be. Finding the right desk for you can sometimes be a lengthy process and buying an actual desk might not be the best thing for you. If you can’t find exactly what you’re looking for, try looking at tables, see if they’ll fit your space instead. You might find that they’re cheaper and bigger options too.

When buying your desk always sit down at it too, you want to make sure that it’s the right height for you, and anyone else who might be using it regularly too.

Avoid buying a desk with drawers if you can too, they’ll just become a dumping ground for the things you don’t want to sort through and you’ll find them full within a matter of weeks of things that you don’t really need.

Take your time finding a chair

Finding the right chair is something completely personal to you, and if you work full-time from home them buying one that’s going to support you in all the areas you need it to is vital for your back, spine and overall health.

Look online for the best options and go equipped with some knowledge before you start shopping in store. Make sure that they have everything you need from them when you go shopping for it.

Don’t be afraid of colour

Having things all white and bright might be the best option for you, but don’t be afraid of adding a little colour into your office space either. A deep hue might be best for some, whilst others might prefer a bright shade to get the creative side flowing, soft, pastel shades are also great for creating a calm and serene setting too.

Consider all of the light

It’s important to think about the light in your office space, especially through the months where we don’t get much sunlight. Consider both the natural light the office gets and the artificial light you’ll be installing. As well as a ceiling light you might need more targeted task lighting in the form of a table lamp or floor lamp, FirstLighting.co.uk have a wide selection of options that are both practical and look stylish too.

Decoration

Just because it’s an office doesn’t mean you can’t add touches of decoration to your personal taste. Just make sure it doesn’t become too crowded otherwise you might get distracted with everything that is going on.

Facing the desk

Consider what is best for productivity when it comes to what is facing the desk. For you is it best placed facing a plain wall, the window or just the room? Consider that you might want something nice to look at, some prints or a plant.

Think practical

Not only do you want to create a space that you’ll want to be in, but you’ve got to run multiple things in the room, like computers, printers, chargers etc, so thinking about sockets is really important. You want to ensure that you have enough and then a couple more thrown in for good measure.

Keeping wires tucked away and together is also something else to think about because if you have a lot they’ll look untidy and messy.

Personal touches

Whether it’s a motivational quote, family or friend pictures, memories or anything else, having a couple of personal touches in your office will make it instantly inviting and pleasing to you. So whilst you consider it a practical space, it can also be a little personal too.
