How To Create A More Sleep-Friendly Bedroom

February 8, 2022 in Other, Reviews - Micaela

When it comes to decorating your bedroom, you must make sure that you think practically. Of course, you want the space to look great and show off your interior design skills, but, most importantly, it should be a place that you can actually get a good night’s sleep.

After all, without enough rest each night, your physical and mental well-being will start to suffer. With that in mind, here are six things that you can do to make your bedroom a more sleep-friendly environment.

1. Clear Out Any Clutter

While you may view your room as organised chaos, your mind just sees it as a mess, causing huge amounts of stress that can disrupt your sleep. For this reason, you should try to keep your room tidy and organised at all times. This can be made easier by clearing out any unnecessary junk cluttering up the place. You can start by removing potential distractions, like technology.

2. Get The Right Bedding

If you wake up feeling numb or stiff in the morning, it’s a clear sign that something is wrong with your bedding. Because of this, you should consider replacing your mattress and pillows with brand new ones. Make sure you try out a few different options to find out which one is most comfortable for you. You should also try out different duvet covers and stock up on blankets.

3. Ensure It Stays Clean

Allergens, like dust and pet hair, can irritate your lungs throughout the night, making it almost impossible to sleep soundly. To prevent this, you should clean your bedroom, including your mattress on a regular basis. If like many of us, you don’t know how to clean your mattress, you’re in luck. It’s actually quite simple, often only requiring a good vacuum now and then.

4. Shut Out The Light

When the time comes to go to sleep, you’ll want your bedroom to be in complete darkness. This is because our minds associate any kind of light with day time, and, as such, will try to keep you awake when light is present. To shut out all external light sources, you can invest in a pair of blackout curtains or blackout blinds. You should also eliminate or limit the tech in your room.

5. Keep The Place Cool

Our body temperatures naturally drop when we drift into sleep, which means that you’ll find it much easier to nod off if your environment is already cool. Because of this, you should turn down the thermometer just before you head to bed. You may even want to switch a fan on during the summer months. If you do get cold, however, ensure you have blankets close by your bed.

6. Pay Attention To Colour

The colour of the walls around you can have a massive impact on your mood, with brighter, more vibrant tones making you feel energised, and cooler ones making you feel relaxed. With that in mind, you’ll want your room to be full of calming colours, like greens, blues, and neutrals. Wherever possible, avoid reds and purples, as they will have the opposite effect.

Don’t let your bedroom rob you of a great night’s sleep. Instead, remember the advice above, and create a more sleep-friendly environment.

These are all so important. I think the right mattress and bedding is so important to creating a nice sleep environment. When we move I want to try and have quite a minimal bedroom and eleviate some of the clutter, not sure if I’ll manage it but I’ll try x

I might have to rethink our bedroom as it’s a dark grey and black, maybe not the most calming of colours. We do only have our bed and chest of drawers, wardrobe with no tv which is a good thing. I think I’ll need to change my pillows soon as they are a little worn out.
