Can you boost your mood with clothes?

Ever heard of ‘dopamine dresses’? This fashion trend revolves around the idea that we can put ourselves in a better mood by wearing certain outfits. From injecting a splash of colour into your wardrobe to brighten up your day, to buying t-shirts with positive slogans on intended to make you and people around you smile. But, does it really work? Together with QUIZ, leading retailer of plus-size tops, we find out more:

What’s your favourite outfit shade?

You’ve probably already heard about something called ‘colour psychology’. These studies have shown that different coloured objects and clothing can have different impacts on individuals. For example, in one study, students were presented with a coloured participant number that was either red, green or black. Results showed that students who were given a red number scored a significant 20% lower than those who presented with a green or black number.

Apparently, when we see people in particular colours, we have a different perception of them:

  • White — this is the least arrogant colour and gives an impression of optimism.
  • Red — demonstrates power and a strong social status, as well as gives the wearer more confidence. It can indicate good health and financial stability.
  • Black — gives the impression of self-assurance and intelligence.

Have you heard that colour plays a part in the success of sports teams, too? Researchers have discovered that red can lead people to act with greater speed and force. And, studies showed that sports teams dressed in mostly black kits, were more likely to receive penalties.

It seems that there may be something behind the idea of dressing to improve our moods. So, what about when it comes to dressing for your own happiness?

How to dress for happiness

Happiness is personal, and what makes one person happy, doesn’t necessarily have the same effect on another. Take colour connotations and cultural differences, for example. Like the colour red? In China, this hue is a symbolism of good luck, yet in many African countries, it’s associated with death. Interestingly, in Nigeria, red has connections with aggression and vitality.

What about the connections we have with certain pieces of clothing — particularly ones associated with a profession? In one study, participants were all handed the same white coat — the only difference was that some were told it was a painter’s coat, and others were told it was a doctor’s. When asked to complete tasks, results revealed that those who were told it was a doctor’s coat performed better. It’s likely that the connotations that they associated with a professional uniform were more positive and motivational than those associated with the painter’s coat.

And we all know that power-dressing is real. Pulling on a tailored trouser suit or skirt and blazer can instil many of us with a feeling of confidence.

What style of clothing and colour makes you feel happy, confident and ready for the world?

The ideal body shape outfit

Feeling good is key to a happy mind. If you’re sometimes unsure about how to dress your body frame, check out these tips:

  • Tall — go for a low-rise trouser with a skinny leg.
  • Pear-shaped — elongate your legs with a straight or bootcut jean. Avoid high-waisted trousers though, as these can make you look shorter.
  • Apple-shaped — emphasise your legs with a straight-leg trouser and pair with heels.
  • Petite — high-waisted trousers and crop tops are good if you’re this size, as they can create the illusion that you’re taller and show off your small physique.

What we wear may just influence how we feel — so why not dress for a good mood? Putting colours and shapes aside, the most important thing is that you’re comfortable in the clothes that you wear. This will ensure your confidence shines through, which is a guaranteed mood booster!

I think you can too. I like to dress nice and it makes me happy. Sometimes when I’m too unwell i feel rubbish and wearing nice clothes helps.

I definitely think that what you wear makes a difference, and as my body changes it is learning to adapt to it 🙂

I totally love using colours to showcase how I feel on the day, bright colours when I feel happy and dull and dark colours when I feel down. I am also petite shape so your tips really help here.

I would have thought cropped tops would make petite people seem smaller not taller. I’m rather impressed that it’s the opposite way round. I tend to wear a lot of blue, white and green myself.

I definitely think that clothes can help boost your mood – I know I always feel better in some clothes rather than others

I’ve started to inject a little more colour into my wardrobe and outfits and I do feel better wearing yellow and other colours x

This is interesting, there’s always something to learn. No wonder I love white colour – although can’t wear it lately, with two messy children around.

I’m pretty small at just 4ft11, and I agree that high-waisted jeans or trousers can help to make you look taller, for sure.

I don’t necessarily think certain colours that I wear improve my mood, but I certainly think that if I feel like I look good, then it makes me feel more confident and happy.

yes definitely! I love wearing black especially as it makes me feel more in charge and in control of things – and chic! 🙂
